The Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency (CSOSA) was created by Congress through the National Capital Revitalization and Self-Government Improvement Act of 1997.
After an initial period of trusteeship, CSOSA was officially recognized as an independent Executive Branch agency in August 2000.
CSOSA assumed adult probation responsibilities from the DC Superior Court and took over parole supervision duties from the dissolved DC Board of Parole. The Revitalization Act transferred the parole adjudication function to the U.S. Parole Commission.
The mission of CSOSA is to increase public safety, reduce recidivism, and support the fair administration of justice in collaboration with the community.
While the Pretrial Services Agency for the District of Columbia (PSA) is a federal independent entity within CSOSA, the two agencies share certain support functions and jointly submit their budgets to Congress.
